Published to coincide with the first-ever public exhibition of this rarely seen portfolio, Hilma af Klint: What Stands Behind the Flowers presents the full suite of drawings alongside related artworks and, for the first time, translations of the artist’s unpublished writings. Curator Jodi Hauptman contributes an introductory essay that situates the portfolio within af Klint’s larger body of work and the circumstances surrounding its creation. Additional essays by Ewa Lajer-Burcharth, Laura Neufeld, and Lena Struwe explore the visual language, materials, and botanical insight embedded in the drawings.

Hilma af Klint (1862–1944), a graduate of Stockholm’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts, began her career as a conventional painter before pioneering a personal form of abstraction well ahead of her contemporaries. Her work—on both canvas and paper—draws deeply from spiritual exploration and, as this project reveals, a profound connection to the rhythms and mysteries of the natural world.
